The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is the highest-level dental qualification in Zambia. It trains students to become Dental Surgeons (Dentists). The programme focuses on advanced surgical procedures, complex diagnoses, and the overall management of oral health.
Until recently, most dentists in Zambia were trained abroad. Now, with local programmes at institutions like UNZA and Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU), the field is growing. After 5–6 years of study, graduates must undergo a mandatory internship at a government-approved hospital before receiving full HPCZ registration.
