Medicine and Surgery (MBChB)

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) is the primary medical degree in Zambia. It is an intensive programme designed to train doctors to diagnose, treat, and prevent human illnesses. It typically involves 1–1.5 years of Pre-medical (Natural Sciences) followed by 5 years of clinical training.

Students must be “indexed” by the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ). Upon graduation, there is a mandatory 18-month internship at a government-approved hospital (like UTH, Livingstone, or Ndola Teaching Hospital) before becoming a fully registered Medical Doctor.

Standard Entry Requirements

Full Grade 12 School Certificate with 5 O-Level Credits or better.

  • Must include: English, Mathematics, Biology, and Science (or Physics and Chemistry).
  • Note: For UNZA or CBU, entry is usually through a competitive first year in Natural Sciences.

Core Modules

Gross Anatomy, Histology, Medical Biochemistry, Systemic Physiology, General Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
