Colleges Must Register with Higher Education Authority
Lusaka, Zambia – February 1st, 2024: The Higher Education Authority (HEA) today issued a strong warning to all colleges and institutions providing specialised training in Zambia. In a press release, the HEA announced that all unregistered private institutions and public institutions not yet recognized must register with the HEA by March 31st, 2024.
Failure to comply will have serious consequences. The HEA stated that any institution not registered by the deadline will be publicly named in a national newspaper as operating illegally, in violation of the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013.
This directive applies to institutions previously overseen by various bodies like the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ), the Health Professionals Council of Zambia (HPCZ), the Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ), and various government ministries and agencies.
Recognizing the potential challenges during this transition, the HEA has made the following concessions:
- Accreditation Requirement Waived: For institutions in this category, the HEA has temporarily waived the requirement for accredited learning programs. This provides more time for a smooth transition and registration process.
- Orientation Workshop in April: In April 2024, the HEA will conduct an orientation workshop on accreditation specifically for these institutions. This workshop will familiarize them with the submission process and ensure they are well-equipped to meet future accreditation requirements.
The HEA encourages all affected institutions to take advantage of this temporary waiver and the upcoming workshop. This is to allow for a smooth registration and recognition process. By working together, the HEA aims to improve the quality of specialized training in Zambia. And further protect the interests of students seeking these valuable qualifications.
